White Sands National Monument can be found in the Chihuahuan Desert, which spreads from southern New Mexico / western Texas down to Mexico.

Here's another good map of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Most of the Chihuahuan Desert lies in Mexico. In the United States, it reaches into Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

The Chihuahuan Desert, in turn, is part of the North American Desert, or Great American Desert, which stretches from southern Oregon / Idaho to Mexico.

With the Chihuahuan Desert it goes the way it does with many deserts - its wildlife and plant populations have decreased and it has become much more barren. The pros call it desertification and that's not a good thing.

Desertification also means water is in short supply. The driest month in the Chihuahuan Desert is March, averaging just 0.27 inches of precipitation.

January 18, 2009 - You are welcome to visit the exhibition Faces and Places of the Chihuahuan Desert at the El Paso Museum of History for free until March 1, 2009. The museum is located at 510 N. Santa Fe, El Paso, Texas 79901.

Robert Schmidt, professor at the University of Texas at El Paso and expert on all things Chihuahuan Desert, took a ton of photographs on his many excursions through the Desert, 30 of which you can examine at the History Museum.

And while you're in El Paso on your free weekend, why not hop over to the El Paso Museum of Archaeology, located at 4301 Transmountain Road, El Paso, TX 79924. Admission is free as well.

And here is the link to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute

If you are into desert plants and creatures, the website of the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition will brighten your day.

Here is the Chihuahuan Desert website of the University of Texas at El Paso. Very good.
